What is a Marine Survey? A Marine Survey is a legal document describing the condition of a vessel at a specific point in time. A marine survey will provide an insurance provider with information on the vessel’s condition, value, and seaworthiness.
A Marine Survey is not A warranty or guarantee that the boat, its systems and equipment will continue to perform overtime. When the boat is sold, a marine survey is not transferable to a new owner.
A Marine Survey entails:
- Pre-survey activities: research the vessel history and documents review (1-2 hours at the office)
- Physical survey & inspection of the vessel: – (Generally 2-4 hours at the boat’s location)
- Post survey activities – report writing: – (3 – 5 hours at the office): Reports are generally 15-20 pages long; they describe the general condition of the vessel and include a seaworthiness statement, Valuation certificate and a maintenance schedule.
- Report printing and delivery (1 hour): delivery is generally done at the vessel’s location, allowing the surveyor to discuss aspects of the vessel more practically.
- Marine Survey relevance: generally good for 3-5 years, depending on the use of the vessel and the insurance coverage.
- Cost of a Marine survey: based on the size of the vessel and impacted by the complexity of the vessel’s systems.
